The closer to the nucleus, the lower the energy.Electrons naturally occupy the lowest possible energy levels, similar to how water flows downhill.However, when electrons absorb energy, they can jump to higher energy levels.When they return to lower energy levels, they release this energy, often in the form of light.This arrangement of electrons in shells determines the chemical properties of the element.Each element has a unique atomic number, which equals the number of protons in its nucleus.Let's look at lithium as an example. With atomic number 3, it has three protons in its nucleus.In a neutral atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons.If an atom loses electrons, it becomes a positive ion.Conversely, if it gains electrons, it becomes a negative ion.The number of protons stays constant, but electrons can be gained or lost, changing the atom's charge.
