The heart has a complex but organized structure with four main chambers.The upper chambers, known as atria, work together as a pair.Below the atria are the ventricles, forming the second pair of chambers.A wall of tissue called the septum completely separates the right and left sides of the heart.This separation creates two distinct sides of the heart, each with its own atrium and ventricle.This arrangement creates four distinct chambers: the right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle, and left ventricle.Now that we understand the basic structure, let's look at how these chambers function.The atria serve as the receiving chambers of the heart, collecting blood from different sources.The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from two major veins: the superior and inferior vena cava.The left atrium receives oxygen-rich blood from four pulmonary veins coming from the lungs.Both atria have specialized thin, elastic walls that allow them to expand and contract efficiently.These elastic walls can stretch to accommodate incoming blood and contract to push blood into the ventricles.When the atria contract, they push blood through one-way valves into the ventricles below.The ventricles are the heart's main pumping chambers, featuring much thicker walls than the atria we discussed earlier.The left ventricle's walls are approximately three times thicker than the right ventricle's, due to its demanding role of pumping blood throughout the entire body.The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery, requiring less force due to the shorter distance and smaller blood vessels.In contrast, the left ventricle must generate much more force to pump oxygen-rich blood through the aorta and to all parts of the body.This difference in function is reflected in the pressure generated by each ventricle. The left ventricle generates about 120 millimeters of mercury, while the right ventricle only needs to generate about 40.
