How the English Captured Jamaica - A Simple History

Jamaica was originally colonized by Spain in 1494 during Columbus's second voyage to the Americas.For over one hundred and fifty years, the Spanish maintained control of the island.During this period, they established settlements like Villa de la Vega, which is now known as Spanish Town.By the mid-17th century, England had become increasingly interested in expanding its Caribbean presence.Under Oliver Cromwell's Western Design plan of 1654, England sought to challenge Spanish dominance in the region.The plan specifically targeted Spanish possessions in the Caribbean, with Jamaica becoming a key objective due to its strategic location and agricultural potential.This marked the beginning of England's deliberate campaign to seize Jamaica from Spanish control.The Invasion of 1655In May 1655, an English expedition led by Admiral William Penn and General Robert Venables arrived in Jamaica with approximately eight thousand troops.This force had initially attempted to capture Hispaniola, which is modern-day Haiti and Dominican Republic, but failed in their assault.Seeking to salvage their mission, they redirected their forces to Jamaica.Despite having controlled the island for over a century, the Spanish defenders were vastly outnumbered with only about fifteen hundred settlers and soldiers compared to eight thousand English troops.The English forces landed at Passage Fort, near present-day Port Royal, and marched toward Spanish Town.After brief resistance, the Spanish governor surrendered to the overwhelming English force.Though many Spanish settlers fled to the mountains, conducting guerrilla warfare against the English for several years.By June 1655, the English had effectively captured the main settlements of Jamaica.
